Regular LYA writing workshops – Tuesdays, 6 – 8pm – Mandela Community Centre, Chapeltown, Leeds

The Sunday Practise (open mic) – First Sunday of the month, from 8pm – Sela Bar, Leeds

Our theme for this year is ‘Citizens of the Word’. As part of this, we are organising a series of performances and provocations aimed at promoting community dialogue around important issues, including environmental justice, social stereotypes, media and identity and female genital mutilation.

2016 events

25 November 2016 – LYA poet Gina Tavares presented her poetry and research at the IALIC conference in Barcelona, Spain.

22 November 2016 – Guest workshop with El Chojín, Mandela Centre, Chapeltown, Leeds.

11 – 16 July 2016 – LYA sent two representatives to the Brave New Voices youth poetry festival, Washington DC.

9 July 2016 – Khadijah Ibrahiim and LYA hosted a ‘Citizens of the Word’ event at the Impressions Gallery as part of Words for the City, Bradford.

9 July 2016 – LYA performed at ‘Celebrating Mandela – the legacy’, hosted by RJC Dance, at the Mandela Centre, Leeds.

8 July 2016 – LYA hosted Voices of a New Generation poetry slam final, West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds.

17 June 2016 – LYA performing at the ‘Postcolonial Education: Teaching, Learning and Schooling in and after Empire’ symposium (from 3-4.30pm), hosted by the University of Leeds and Leeds Beckett University, in association with the Institute for Colonial and Postcolonial Studies and the Centre for Culture and the Arts.

3 May 2016 – LYA took part in an open mic at Union 105 East St Arts, Leeds. The event was hosted by Anne-Marie Atkinson and Akeim Buck.

27 March 2016 – LYA performed at Rise and Shine: A Creative Awakening at Temple of Boom, Leeds, to help raise funds and awareness for homelessness.

10 March 2016 – LYA hosted Art Forecast in collaboration with The Weather Café, Leeds.

25 February 2016 – LYA hosted the ‘Citizens of the Word’ poetic debate at Inkwell Arts, Leeds.

28 January 2016 – LYA performed at the Child Friendly Leeds awards night, Leeds City Varieties.
